Thinking about a Flyin' Miata Turbo Kit - Need Advice!

I’ve been considering upgrading my Mazda Miata with a Flyin’ Miata turbo kit, and I could really use some advice from those who have experience with these kits. I’m particularly interested in the performance enhancements and whether the investment is really worth it.

What to Consider Before Purchasing

  • Chassis Compatibility: I own an NA8, but I’ve heard that different versions might have some unique requirements. Is it easy to install regardless of the chassis version? What are the nuances between the NA6, NA8, NB, and ND1 versions?
  • Installation Experience: For those who have installed it themselves, how difficult was it? Did you need any special tools or parts? I’m fairly handy, but I want to know what I’m getting into.
  • Tuning Requirements: I assume that tuning is essential after installation. Do you recommend specific tuning shops or experiences?
  • Performance Expectations: For those who have made the jump, how much of a performance increase did you actually experience? What did you notice in terms of driving experience and reliability?

Looking for Recommendations

If you’ve gone down this road before, I’d love to hear your thoughts on:

  • Pros and cons of the Flyin’ Miata turbo kit compared to other options.
  • Any tips or tricks you wish you had known when you did your install.
  • Are there any common pitfalls or mistakes new installers tend to make?
  • Overall, do you think it enhances the Miata experience, or does it come with complications that might make it not worth it?

Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide! Looking to make an informed choice here.

I’m considering the Flyin Miata Turbo Kit too! I’m worried about compatibility with my 1999 Miata. Has anyone installed it on that model?

I have a 2000 Miata and it fits perfectly! Just ensure you check the intercooler placement as it can be tricky.

I installed the kit on my 2001 and had to make a few modifications to the exhaust. It’s worth it for the power boost!

What kind of modifications are we talking about? I’d love to know before I commit.

For my 94 Miata, I had to cut some supports for the downpipe. Just keep your tools handy when working on it!

Good to know! Did you face any other challenges during installation?

The wiring was a bit of a headache too. I recommend labeling everything before you disconnect!

That’s solid advice! What was the hardest part of the wiring for you?

Getting the ECU tuned afterward was tricky as well. But overall, it was a great project.

Did you go with a specific tuner? Any recommendations?

I used a local guy who specializes in Miatas! Definitely priceless advice; ask around in forums for good recommendations.

That sounds great! I’ll definitely check local forums before settling on a tuner.

Be patient with the installation; it can get frustrating. But once it’s done, the performance makes it all worthwhile!

Totally agree! Just think of the boost when it’s finally running!

Is it wrong to say it might be simpler to just buy a turbocharged Miata instead of upgrading? Asking for a friend!

Haha, that’s a fair point! But where’s the fun in that?

I’ve been researching the Flyin Miata Turbo Kit, and it seems to provide significant power gains, often around 50-100 hp depending on the setup. It’s impressive for a Miata!

That’s super informative! I’d love to hear more about the throttle response—does it feel laggy at all?

A lot of users report that the throttle response is very sharp with this kit. It’s designed to work well with the Miata’s lightweight structure, giving it a nimble feel.
