Looking for Replacement Muffler for My 08 Smart Car!

Seeking Advice on My 2008 Smart Car Muffler

Hi all,

I own a 2008 Smart Fortwo, and I’ve been having some issues with the muffler lately. It’s making some weird noises, and I am wondering if it’s time for a replacement. I wanted to reach out to the community to see if anyone else has faced similar issues and what solutions you’ve found.

Symptoms I’m Noticing:

  • Loud rumbling noises: It’s especially noticeable when I start the car or accelerate.
  • Vibrations: There’s some noticeable vibration coming from the rear of the car, which wasn’t there before.
  • Fuel Efficiency: I think my fuel consumption has slightly increased lately, although that might just be my imagination.

Questions I Have:

  1. Replacement Options: Has anyone found a reliable replacement muffler for the 08 Smart Car? I’ve seen some options on Amazon and eBay, but I’m not sure what brands are trustworthy.
  2. DIY Installation: Is it feasible to replace the muffler myself, or should I take it to a mechanic? For those who have done it before, what tools would I need?
  3. Cost Estimates: What should I expect to pay for a replacement muffler plus any installation costs?

I appreciate any help or advice you can provide!

Hey! I’ve replaced mine with an aftermarket performance muffler from MagnaFlow. Great sound, and it was around $200. Much cheaper than OEM!

I went with OEM since I wanted to avoid any potential issues. It was definitely pricier, around $350, but I feel it was worth it for peace of mind.

That’s fair! Sometimes spending a bit more is worth it. Did you get it installed yourself?

I found a great deal on eBay for a universal muffler, but not sure if it’s the right fit. Anyone had luck with eBay parts?

Be careful with eBay! I’ve heard mixed reviews about their parts. Always check seller ratings before buying anything!

Valid point, Regina! I think I’ll stick to reputable retailers then. Any suggestions?

AutoZone sometimes has decent prices on aftermarket parts. Just check if they have a return policy in case it doesn’t fit.

Great tip! I’ll check them out. I want something that lasts, especially for city driving.

Honestly, the stock muffler might just be the best option. I’ve read that some aftermarket ones can create annoying drone sounds.

Totally get that, Patrick. I’m looking for something better but not obnoxious. What’s the fun in a loud car anyway?

Why not just remove it completely and go straight pipe? Just kidding—definitely don’t do that! :joy: Still, some people prefer no muffler at all.

Haha, Kimberly! That would definitely turn some heads! :joy: But seriously, I want to keep the noise levels down. Hard to find the right balance.

I’m also looking into muffler options for my 08 Smart Car. I’ve read that a high-performance muffler can improve exhaust flow, which may boost engine performance. Has anyone experienced this?

That’s true! I upgraded mine last year, and I felt a noticeable improvement in acceleration. Just keep in mind potential emissions regulations!

Upgrading can also affect gas mileage. A more efficient muffler might help you save on fuel costs over time. Anyone know specific models that fit well?

It’s important to consider the emissions compliance when swapping out your muffler. Not all aftermarket options meet local regulations. Always double-check before making a purchase!

For the 2008 Smart Car, I recommend looking at performance mufflers made by Borla or MagnaFlow. They are reputed for enhancing performance without compromising emissions.
