Is the 351M a Good Engine? Let's Discuss!

I’ve been doing some research on the Ford 351M engine and I’m curious about everyone’s experiences with it. For those who have owned or worked with this engine, I would love to gather some insights. Here are a few points I’m particularly interested in:

Reliability

  • How does the 351M hold up over time? Anyone have issues with common failures?
  • What’s the maintenance like? Are there specific things to keep an eye on?

Performance

  • How does it perform compared to other engines in similar vehicles?
  • What’s the horsepower and torque like? Is it enough for daily driving or off-roading?

Modifications

  • Are there good aftermarket parts available for performance upgrades?
  • If you’ve done any modifications, what kind of gains can one expect?

General Suitability

  • Would you recommend this engine to someone looking for a classic or vintage project?
  • Any comparisons to other Ford engines like the 351W or others?

Looking forward to your thoughts and experiences, and if possible, any recommendations you might have!

I’ve had a 351M in my truck for over a decade. It delivers around 155 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. Not the best in fuel efficiency, but it’s reliable!

That’s decent power! I’ve heard the torque makes it great for towing as well. How often do you have to do maintenance?

The 351M can be a bit thirsty, averaging maybe 10-12 mpg. But if you’re not pushing the limits, it’s pretty dependable over time. Mine’s still going strong!

That’s a fair point! I noticed the same with mine. How has the handling been for you?

Handling is solid, but don’t expect sports car performance. It feels like a heavy beast, which is partly why I love it! It’s all about that raw power.

The maintenance can be pricey if you’re not doing it yourself. I’ve replaced the alternator twice and had to deal with a cooling system upgrade, but it’s worth it for the longevity.

That’s what I love about it too! The weight gives it that grounded feel. Plus, it just looks tough!

I’ve had mine for 15 years, and aside from routine stuff, it’s been a champ! How’s the reliability comparing to newer models?

I think the reliability is subjective. Some swear by the 351M, while others have had issues. What’s the most challenging repair you’ve faced?

Exactly! I had a friend who had to rebuild his engine after only 100k miles. Makes me worried about long-term prospects.

Don’t let that story scare you off! I’m over 200k miles, and it still runs like a top. It can definitely vary based on usage and care.

Fuel efficiency is definitely lacking, that’s for sure. But if you’re not driving it every day, the performance makes up for it!

True! Sometimes I feel like I’m spending more on gas than on improvements. But what’s an adventure without a robust engine?

It’s funny how we outweigh the negatives with feelings attached to this engine. I love the rumble of my 351M. Just can’t get enough of that sound!

You’re right! It’s like music to the ears! Makes driving an emotional experience rather than just commuting.

I’ve had my 351M for about five years now, and while it has its quirks, overall, I’m satisfied. It’s strong and reliable, but I’ve noticed overheating can be a problem if not maintained properly.

Interesting point! I’ve read that upgrading the radiator and ensuring good coolant circulation can help mitigate that issue.

I’ve experienced the dreaded oil leaks with my 351M. They’ve been tricky to pin down. Has anyone else tackled that issue? What did it cost you?

Yes! Oil leaks can be from the valve covers or oil pan. I managed to fix mine for around $200 using a DIY approach.
